‘Tis the season for merry-making… and sometimes over-indulging. If you’ve imbibed in too many “spirits” at a spirited holiday party, try this cure based on Dr. Vasant Lad’s book, The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies.
Add the juice from a 1/4 lime, 1/2 teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt to a large glass of water. Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, stir it up and drink immediately. Yes, this is the natural version of Alka-Seltzer.
Remember that song, “Put The Lime in The Coconut“? This is also an excellent hangover cure. Coconut is nature’s Gatorade – minus all the crap. I drank limes squeezed into fresh coconuts during my 11 day fast in Thailand many years ago.
Throughout the day, sip lime in coconut water or, try warm water with lemon.
Although you may not feel like it, exercise is a fantastic way to help the body process all the extra alcohol, sugar and other delights. At the very least, get outside and take a walk as early in the day as possible.
A few prevention tips while we are at it…
Start with a healthy, nourishing meal. You’re less likely to eat and drink as much and the alcohol won’t rush to the blood stream as fast with a full stomach. Drink many glasses of water throughout the day before the party and alternate water with a drink throughout the evening. Drink a full glass of water before bed, or sip some mint tea to soothe the tummy. Add some sleep to your sleep bank account by taking a nap before the party. Even 20 minutes can help.
Cheers!
